Precise Olive Irrigation Solution (POIS)

Partners involved: AltSol (ADS developer) / Alexander Marcel Schuschnigg (Farmer, end-user)

Sector: Irrigation Management / Olive Cultivation

Country of the Pilot: Greece

About the SIP

Precise Olive Irrigation Solution (POIS) focuses on addressing water management challenges in Mediterranean olive groves, where fluctuating water supply and increasing climate stress make efficient irrigation difficult. The pilot is located in Crete, Greece, an area where farmers often struggle with unreliable water pressure and the high labor demands of manual irrigation.

The SIP introduces a modular, open-source precision irrigation system that dynamically adapts to real-time water availability and pressure, ensuring optimal irrigation even in remote and low-connectivity areas.

The Problem

In Crete, inconsistent Water Supply Reliability (WSR) leads to water waste, excessive energy use, and inefficiency. Farmers must frequently visit their fields to monitor irrigation, which increases costs, time, and fuel use. Existing systems are not designed to automatically adjust to variable water conditions or operate autonomously when connectivity is limited.

The Solution

POIS delivers an intelligent precision irrigation system in two interoperable versions:

  • Cloud-based ADS – built on AltSol’s PRAMA IoT platform, using LoRaWAN sensors and 4G connectivity to collect and process field data remotely.

  • Edge-based ADS (MOSIC) – an open-hardware irrigation controller powered by solar energy, capable of local data processing and real-time decision-making in the field, even without internet access.

Both versions integrate with OpenAgri services, such as the Irrigation and Reporting Services, for decision support, evapotranspiration estimation, and automated reporting. The MOSIC controller and its documentation will be shared openly, supporting the adoption of affordable, connectivity-friendly precision irrigation tools across Mediterranean olive farms.
