The challenge - Addressing Water Scarcity and Optimizing Irrigation Efficiency
Water scarcity and inefficient irrigation practices pose major challenges for Polish farmers, particularly those growing high-value crops such as sugar beets and potatoes. The increasing variability in rainfall patterns and extreme weather events further stress the need for smarter, data-driven irrigation solutions. The main challenges include:
- Overuse and waste of water resources, leading to increased costs and environmental strain.
- Lack of real-time soil and weather data integration, preventing optimal irrigation scheduling.
- High energy costs associated with inefficient water pumping systems, increasing operational expenses.
How the system works
To tackle these issues, SIP4 introduces an open-source, smart irrigation controller that combines real-time soil moisture monitoring, automated water distribution, and weather-based scheduling. This ADS enhances irrigation efficiency through:
Soil moisture sensors placed across the field, continuously measuring real-time soil hydration levels.
Integration with weather data, adjusting irrigation schedules based on rainfall forecasts and evapotranspiration models.
Automated valve and pump activation, ensuring precise water distribution only where and when needed.
Remote access via a mobile dashboard, allowing farmers to monitor and control irrigation systems from anywhere.
By leveraging sensor-driven automation, this ADS helps farmers reduce water waste, optimize resource use, and improve crop yields while minimizing operational costs.
ADS Models
This SIP offers two distinct irrigation control models:
CLOUD MODEL
Cloud-Based ADS: The system collects and transmits soil moisture data to a cloud platform, where analytics optimize irrigation scheduling.
Edge-Based ADS: Local processing on-site enables real-time water management decisions without requiring constant internet connectivity.
OpenAgri OS Services
SIP4 integrates with OpenAgri OS services to provide intelligent, data-driven irrigation management:
Weather Data Service: Utilizes climate forecasts and historical weather data for predictive irrigation planning.
Soil Moisture Monitoring Module: Aggregates data from field sensors, ensuring optimal hydration levels for crops.
